Amazing book - well worth reading and the sequels. I love to be surprised by books. I couldn't put it down - until I had to get in my car (this will teach me to read while walking), set it down on the top of the car to get the keys, and forgot it - drove away, it flew off of the car in the middle of an intersection. I know because I went back to get it when I realized and had to pick up pieces from the middle of the road. Felt like I killed someone...had to go out and buy a new one immediately to find out how it ended.

I didn't think I was going to like this book when I started it. The cheesy frame story, Sebastian and his teddy bear, college students with servants. It was all too much at first, but I really got into it by the end. It reminded me of Gormenghast, in that there were lots of grotesque characters who were initially repulsive to me, but who I ended up loving. I'm definitely going to read more of Waugh's novels.
