I did not enjoy this book. The beginning was promising, and then it just flopped. I couldn't wait for it to be over.

i read half way through and it was getting no where.. Very wordy.. unnecessary. very disappointed.

This is a classic novel and deservedly so. Set in rural Scotland in the early 20th century, it captures a peasant culture that is now lost. Author Lewis Grassic Gibbon also shows an impressive understanding of women through his heroine, the sensitive but resilient Chris Guthrie. The beginning is striking and poetic, the ending deeply moving. It sags a bit in the middle but is worth persevering with, and I'd be interested to read the rest of this trilogy.
