c1976. Who could forget the publicity pictures of Jacqueline Bisset for the film of this book. I found this to be a rather banal story. “It’s a better book than ‘Jaws’,” said “Time” magazine’s critic. IMHO -not correct just your average adventure story. But I can see that it was a good beach read of its day. Benchley (May 8, 1940 – February 12, 2006) had been educated at Harvard and worked at The Washington Post. FWFTB: treasure, honeymoon, salvage, amouples, sea. FCN: Gail Sanders, Treece, David Sanders.
It took me awhile to get into this book. I bought it at the Seattle airport, read a few pages and then chose a trashy celebrity magazine instead. I returned to the book again after a few months. I had to read at least 20 pages to start to become interested in the narrator. The prose is concise and constructed, with flashbacks woven fairly seamlessly throughout, although sometimes the scenes/incidents that launch the flashbacks seem a little contrived and created only for the flashback's sake. But without the flashbacks, the story would be hollow ... I found the narrator's past much more interesting than her present.
Slow to get going, but once it does, it's a pretty good read. Just when it starts to get tedious (which it does in places), Something Happens that I never would have expected. One minor nitpick: surely someone during the editing process should have corrected all of the misused semicolons?
