Is there anyone out there that doesn't love Gregory Maguire? I'm sure all his fans have already read this one. I read it after "Mirror, Mirror" which I LOVED, and while there are similarities, this book has a rollicking humor running through it that makes it a really fun read. I think alot of his stuff is not only inspired by old fairy tales, but also long walks through European meadows, cobbled streets, castle corridors. Tuscany in the case of "Mirror, Mirror" and Haarlem in the case of this book. Also I think GM has done alot of looking at paintings and his take on them is profound and refreshing. He doesn't hesitate to make fun of art and artists as well, so for an art historian like me, used more to reverence and academic attitudes, GM's take is refreshing.
