I enjoyed this book, one of the summer reading selections of a local high school that I picked up at the Barnes and Noble store near work. I liked the story and the writing style and I am old enough to know the authenticity of this heart-wrenching story. It has similar themes to those explored in "The Help," but these themes are much weightier. The story also occurs in the late 1940's, so it predates "The Help" by a dozen or more years.
What a really gorgeous book. I mean literally, the actual book itself. THIS is the reason I am loathe to get a e-reader (reading 10 books at once is an argument FOR getting one).. Anyway, to think people are missing out on the high quality bonding, the great paper, the intricate embellishments. Ahhh.. I could go on, but let's get into the substance. Frankly, a little creepy. In a good way, similar to The Graveyard Book Also a little bit like The Mysterious Benedict Society. This story sets up very beautifully for the sequel. I like way secrets are revealed throughout the novel. The characters are very unique and likeable. I felt like the plot was a bit slow in spots but overall it was a very good read with lots of potential for a good series.
