Very disappointing. I had high hopes for this novel, whose author is an academic specializing in the history of science. Although her expertise in her specialty shows, so does her inexperience in writing fiction. Very clunky exposition, reminiscent of the Harlequin romance novels I read as a kid, and the "Mary Sue" nature of the protagonist was like bad fanfiction. I forced myself to finish all 500 pages, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone unless you have a keen interest in the history of illustrated texts about alchemy and don't mind skimming through 95% of the novel.

Enjoyed the sense of time and place Ford provided. There were many similarities to Snow Falling on Cedars, a better written book in my opinion, but quite different as well. Made me feel how hard it must have been to be Asian when the U.S. was at war with Japan and you were seen as the enemy. I loved the hard-bitten cafeteria lady who proved an unexpected ally to the two kids.
