This book was easy to get into; difficult to get out of. I loved the language and really felt like I was going into another world when I read - if I was interrupted and had to lift my head up, I wanted to shake it to clear it back into reality. It definitely dense and deserved more de-coding than I gave it. I was totally captured until the dog - scene. I get the symbolism of the act, but it seemed totally different than the rest of the book, though in a way, it was the same... The hostility, the protective violence, the animalistic need for power and possession were the same; the verbiage was less distilled or something... On a side note, I loved the scene where the Dr is in bed and Nora explains why it's ok for him to be wearing a gown - I cracked up!

This is a great adventure book for kids. I enjoyed it. Most of it you could really see kids 10 years old or so doing, then toward the end it got magical, which I liked very much. I am looking forward to reading the other volumes.

This is the second book I read from this author. It got me started on a quest to read more fictional narratives from Old Testament Bible history. I like the "realness" of Queen Esther in this novel. It debunks the traditional love story & dives into more interesting, cultural details of the time period. Plus, you're left wondering is it real or fiction?...except, that it's listed in the fiction category.

I wrote my college entrance essay on this book. Probably one of the best anti-war books there is. Wonderful quirks, wonderful one-liners, terrifying imagery, fantastic flights of fancy. A little of Vonnegut's cutesiness, but I read it in high school, so that can be forgiven.
