You're right, Elizabeth, this book had me scared of clowns for years afterwards. I also tackled this 1000-page monster as a child, but I thought it was a brilliant read!
If you play piano and are passionate about music, this book is a wonderful choice for you.
When you take the time to read and re-read (a second reading is absolutely crucial), this book is amazing. How did Faulkner know how to write like this? His characters are so real, thier emotions are so raw, and you almost become another person as you become engaged in his work. He said something like this about his writing process for The Sound and the Fury "I would go out by myself in the woods and wait. They would come to me. I chased them around as they climbed the tree. I watched them look for the coin. It tired me out, running after them." These characters were real people to Faulkner. To him, The Sound and the Fury wasn't fiction.
