This was one of those books that's been sitting on our shelves for years and one that "I have to read sometime." Well, in the dead of winter when I couldn't get to the library, I picked it up and read it. I liked, not loved, it. I think b/c it's a translation, it read a bit slowly. I felt more "scholarly" after finishing it, though, like I'd enriched my reading repertoire. She's (Gabriel Garcia Marquez) one of those authors that an ex-English teacher should be familiar with. :)

life is just a cicle that goes over around and around

Dan Simmons is a genre chameleon. He's written successful science fiction (I know him through his four Hyperion-Endymion sf novels), fantasy, horror, and thrillers. I've been looking forward to reading this one for a while. It is described as a horror novel based on Sir John Franklin's disastrous 1845-1848 Arctic expedition, and I enjoy reading both good horror fiction and nonfiction accounts of polar expeditions. I've even written about the Franklin expedition in some of my own books on exploration and cartography. The Terror did not quite live up to my expectations. The big resolution--while well foreshadowed and not in the least "tacked on"--failed to satisfy me; it seemed anticlimactic and somewhat incongruous. I also felt that Simmons's use of a vast number of viewpoint characters, while it gave the book that big chewy "epic" feel, created an episodic lack of focus. From time to time there was a bit too much sprawl, a feeling that too much effort had been made to work in such things as explanations of how pinnaces differ from jolly boats, or speculations about evolution. Yet for the most part, and almost to the end, the novel is a thrilling read . . . if, that is, you can handle vivid descriptions of the physical and psychological torments suffered by men in extreme, unforgiving situations. I found the men-pushed-to-the-brink-and-beyond storyline, which comported well with what is known about the tragic end of the Franklin expedition, at least as compelling as the horrific encounters with the unknown terror that waits out on the ice, in the darkness, with teeth and claws. And there are several remarkably vivid and imaginative scenes, including an Arctic incarnation of Poe's "The Masque of the Red Death," that will stay with me for a long time. Guillermo del Toro would be a good director for the movie version, if there is going to be one.
