my mad crush on the author aside, this book was pretty fabulous. it definitely borders on "absurd" more than his first novel, but as someone who toiled away in a "stan" for 2 years, he hits on the perfect storm between the old and new of the culture so well, that it would be hard to ever try to attempt to write about it on your own.
