Not that Distoevsky needs my review but I thought I would add that my favorite part of the book as an Orthodox Christian is the un-self-concious presentation of Russian piety and monasticism during the 19th century. It's very illuminating to see the faith from a living writer's perspective during the imperial period.
I bought this book at the 2011 ALA Midwinter Conference just because it was so beautiful. It's a great combination of nature photography and science for young people. My copy comes with a matching bookmark that says, "Studying Antarctica has never been for the fainthearted."
