The Piano Teacher is a period romance story involving European ex-pats in Hong Kong. I picked up this book as an easy and shallow junk read. Perhaps it was because of my low expectations, but I was pleasantly surprised at the exquisitely crafted story. The storyline reminds me of Atonement, with its rich and cinematic feel. The characters are spellbinding and filled with human frailty and passion, reminiscent of the English Patient. If you have sworn off reading love stories, it's your chance to start again.

I read most of this with my own Boston terrier sitting on my lap. I found so much to relate to in this book- from rescue dog experiences, to falling head over heels in love with a pet, to the absolute terror of seeing your beloved doggie off their leash and across the street (although mine have always returned to me unscathed). I think this book will be best loved and appreciated by people like me whose pets sleep in their bed with them, call their pets "fur babies" or talk to their pets as if they are people. If you treat your dog like a... dog... you may find Julie Klam a little crazy. I see her as a kindred spirit and this book made me laugh and cry and I couldn't put it down (it was a quick read- finished it in a day). I bought this solely based on the cover and was pleasantly surprised!
