This is a must for anyone interested in New England, extremism, how outdoing people isn't always a good idea, why moderation is so English, why Cromwell is the first Stalin and what the Puritans share with the Taliban. Not that these are explore explicitly, but it's all there.
The beauty and tragedy of this novel is unmatched! I couldn't hardly put it down. It was captivating, inspiring, intense, suspenseful, overwhelming, and masterfully tragic! The ending is by far one of the saddest ever imagined, perhaps even THE saddest! Thomas Hardy is a master of pathos!
