Good in parts - wonderful evocation of childhood, and clever manipulation of the reader re a main character....but in the end I found the adult incarnation of the hero unconvincing, and thought perhaps Irving didn't want to treat horrors with his usual manic grand guignol, but didn't really know how else to do it. Probably I'd have liked this much more if I hadn't read Garp and Owen Meany, but since I had I found it a disappointment.
